About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate power-systems engineer who is motivated by the opportunity to plan and shape the future energy infrastructure of Australia. Looking for new challenge in 2021, then this might interest you!

This role will support the delivery of a variety of AEMO’s headline power system planning assessments, including but not limited to:

  • The Integrated System Plan – setting a 20-year blueprint guiding the future development of the east coast’s power system.
  • The annual System Strength and Inertia assessments – deciding when and how to declare shortfalls in these crucial system security services across the National Electricity Market.
  • The Network Support and Control Ancillary Services review – considering any near-term need for new services to ensure power system reliability and security.

This is a full-time permanent role and will report to the Manager of the Integrated System Planning team or the Manager of the Network Planning team. Successful applicants can be based out of any of our offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney or Norwest with flexibility to work from home.

Key accountabilities:

  • Plan the future infrastructure across the NEM including the infrastructure needed to deliver a secure and reliable power system with large quantities of renewable and distributed energy resources.
  • Assess future requirements for power system security, including system strength, frequency control, and other essential power system needs.
  • Undertake simulation and analysis of the electricity transmission network using specialised computer simulation tools and use these to identify network capability and emerging limitations.
  • Interpret and justify simulation outcomes, draw conclusions, and provide robust recommendations on network adequacy and investment options.
  • Prepare clear, concise and high quality written and verbal communication; including reports, stakeholder presentations, information packs, briefing papers, and contributions to key planning documents (such as the Integrated System Plan).

Required skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in electrical engineering preferably with a power system focus.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in power system analysis at the transmission level
  • Accreditation as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or Registered Professional Engineer (RPEng) is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in electricity transmission network analysis and the interpretation of analysis performed by others.
  • Experience or research in electrical power systems dynamics, stability concepts, and assessment techniques.
  • Experience in using power systems analysis tools including the ability to use computer simulation tools for at least load flow and fault level calculation.
  • Ability to prepare high quality reports suitable for management or publication.
  • Strong customer facing skills with an ability to communicate and negotiate in an effective manner.
  • Proficient in a range of general computer packages (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, database, and some programming) to enhance the quality and quantity of work.
