JOB DESCRIPTION

BEAR Scotland inspect, manage and maintain over 850km of Scotland’s truck road network including 460 trunk road structures in the North East of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We work in a diverse stretch of the country’s road network on a variety of structures from rural masonry arch bridges, culverts and walls to larger motorway and dual carriageway structures on the A90, A9, A92 and M90.

An opportunity has arisen within BEAR Scotland’s North East Bridges Team for a Bridge Engineer to work in our Perth office. The role would involve working in the Bridges team assisting with the inspection of all network structures as well as the investigation, design, procurement, supervision and management of bridge maintenance and refurbishment works. Candidates should hold a degree in Civil Engineering. A background in Bridge Engineering is preferable but not essential. Some post-graduate industry experience is essential. BEAR are able to offer continued support towards professional accreditation if this has not already been achieved.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are interested in helping to manage the delivery of a diverse programme of work. The successful candidates will have good communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.

Job Purpose

The Bridge Engineer will lead on day-to-day activities relating to the management and maintenance of the NE unit structures. Responsible for the completion of allocated work to technical standard, to programme and budget.

Responsibilities And Activities Include (but Are Not Restricted To)

  • Comply with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company’s Integrated Management Systems.
  • Delivering allocated projects on time and within budget.
  • Outline and detailed design of bridges projects and the associated cost estimates and the production and retention of adequate design records.
  • Update structural records through the clients’ preferred structures management systems.
  • Assist with effective monitoring and control of costs.
  • Assist with establishing good relationships with the client, customers and other bodies.
  • Assist with answering of correspondence.
  • Planning of day-to-day allocated workload.
  • Assist with undertaking the Designer’s role in accordance with the CDM Regulations and the drafting of appropriate risk assessments.
  • Assist with the production of Health & Safety Information packs.
  • Assist with the management and supervision of sub-contractors.
  • Assist others within the Bridges Teams as required.

Knowledge, Skills And Experience
  • University degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Full approved UK driving licence.
  • Some post-graduate industry experience, preferably in bridge engineering or civil engineering infrastructure.
