About the Role and Your Impact 

As Compono is still rapidly expanding our Talent Optimisation SaaS product range, our client base and our amazing team, we are seeking a Lead DevOps Engineer for our DevOps team to lead and mentor a team of passionate DevOps engineers, as well as align our other key project team stakeholders (i.e. other engineering leads, Product Owners, and QA). 


As a Lead DevOps Engineer, you can solve any technical problem in your field given enough time. You will have diverse experience to foresee several solutions to upcoming problems and you know how to make trade-offs and be comfortable with the process. In addition, you will have a solid understanding of software design and systems architecture to be able to devise short term technical delivery plans. 


Please note this position can be based in Brisbane or Sydney due to our TRUE flexible working culture!


Your Special Talents

The goal of a Lead DevOps Engineer is to understand how their plans fit into the overall technical strategy of the company, what effect their decisions make on the system architecture and use their engineering and people best practices and knowledge to make their team-high performers! To help you achieve this, you will have:

  • High level of proficiency in building, running, scaling, and optimizing infrastructure with a security-centric approach 
  • Experience with most AWS infrastructure components 
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of programming languages - e.g. TypeScript, node.js 
  • Managing web-scale infrastructure using modern technologies and DevOps principles 
  • Thorough understanding of logs, alerts, and monitoring key metrics with a strong background in reporting 
  • Knowledge of container environments such as Docker as well as Serverless framework 
  • Ability to debug problems mostly unassisted


Though ultimately, your team management and technical leadership skills will be your most significant assets, so you will have experience and knowledge in the following:

  • Mentoring & Knowledge Sharing. Mentoring and coaching other engineers and helping them build confidence in their technical abilities by continuously sharing industry best practices and being a supporter of a positive learning culture.
  • Technical Leader. Given enough time, solving any technical problem in your field and doing that efficiently. You will have enough diverse experience to foresee several solutions to future problems.
  • Team Planning & Estimating. Leading planning and estimation sessions for short term projects ensuring buy-in from all team members and ensuring efficiency by putting the team's time to best use with competing demands.
  • Process Improvement. Continuously identifying and contributing process improvements suggestions both for your team and across the company.
  • Adaptability. Ability to deal with a start-up which is fast-paced and continuously changing and able to deal with unknowns and help build better processes and best practices.
