About the Position

The position is responsible for driving a proactive strategic safety culture within City of Gold Coast Organisational Services operational areas, which includes Fleet, Stores, and Mail & Deliveries. You will be responsible for leading a team of safety professionals and providing strategic guidance to executive levels of the organisation in ensuring the safety of staff in accordance with WHS legislation and their respective safe systems of work. The position is also responsible for leading the maintenance and driving continuous improvements within the Directorate's WH&S Management System with a view to meeting or exceeding the requirements for third party certification to Workers' Compensation Self Insurance (NAT), the Work Health and Safety Act/Regulation and associated Codes of Practice, the National Heavy Vehicle Law, and the Australian Government Building and Construction WHS Accreditation. Additionally, the position will work with and support the Corporate Safety and Risk Branch and work with directorates and senior stakeholders as required, delivering a holistic work health and safety service, ensuring continuity throughout the organisation.

Key Deliverables of the position:

  • Drive the development, implementation, and administration of audits, inspections, and initiatives to improve work health and safety performance, and proactively drive the outcomes and milestones associated with work health and safety projects, initiatives, and investigations.
  • Present strategic analysis and formulate suitable recommendations to the directorate for the purpose of informed decision making, through sound and comprehensive research, interpretation, and analysis of information.
  • Manage and lead the program of work and activities of the Organisational Services Operational Areas WHS team to ensure operations are compliant with relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, and Council's safety management system.
  • Lead and drive the development of skills capability within the business on health and safety assurance and investigation activities.
  • Work proactively with the directorate and broader organisation to ensure the ongoing development, consultation, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organisation's work health and safety management system.

About You

You are an experienced leader in the WHS industry with extensive knowledge and experience in driving a positive, proactive safety culture. You have proven exceptional stakeholder engagement skills at a senior executive level.

To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • A degree in Work Health and Safety (or other relevant, equivalent level of WHS qualification).
  • A Diploma of Management or equivalent knowledge is desirable.
  • A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is desirable.
  • It is desirable that you are a Certified OHS Professional through the Safety Institute of Australia or equivalent.
  • A "can do" person who thrives on innovatively solving problems in a complex environment.
  • Significant experience as a WHS Professional within a large multi-disciplinary organisation (preferably self-insured).
  • The ability to coach, develop and motivate staff and executive levels of the organisation in work health and safety
  • Effective analytical, problem-solving, auditing, and investigation skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to proactively consult with a range of employees and officers on all levels in the organisation.
