Hays Australia are partnered with Hays Canada on the recruitment of 2 Chief Geotechnical Engineers. Our client is a world class mining and resources company with several operations around the world. This facility is located in the Elk Valley of British Columbia in Canada. British Columbia is defined by its pacific coastline and scenic mountain ranges. The actual site is one of four steelmaking coal sites, and is situated in an area that is ideal for all outdoor activities. The company makes the steelmaking coal (known as metallurgical or coking coal). The majority of the processed product are shipped around the world and the site is able to produce over 5 million tonnes with an expected life of over 25 years. This role is a Monday-Friday role and would require relocation to a nearby town.

Your new role
You will report to the Engineering Superintendent who reports directly to the GM. The incumbent is responsible for handling all mining geotechnical related operations and projects in an open pit coal setting. As always, safety is first and this role will have you as one of the leaders in this respect.

You will need to be technically strong and use those strengths to apply expertise & problem solving in rock slopes, dumps for waste, analysis of blast vibrations, soil slope, and more. You will also be required to create and implement various technical and training programs for your team to eliminate/mitigate/improve designs. Another aspect of this role will include the coordination of site geotechnical programs. This includes monitoring systems, coordination with operations/processing groups, and support on analysis and design. Short and long range plans for geotechnical hazards, design deficiencies, and data gaps will be a port of this role. Finally, this role will oversee more junior engineering personnel on the team, and any external contractors on site.

What you'll need to succeed

  • You will need to be a Geotechnical expert with at least 7 years of Geotechnical experience in an open pit mining environment.
  • Strong people / communication skills is essential to be able to work with your team and various stakeholders in a highly collaborative environment.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Geological, Geotechnical or Civil Engineering is required
  • Confident in using Microsoft Office and various industry standard geotechnical mining software suites
  • Strong on data analysis, site investigations and project evaluation / management
