About The Position

Engineering and design are at the heart of McConnell Dowell. Due to the continued growth of McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust.) Pty Ltd, we are excited to be recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer to join our in-house Design and Engineering team. We are encouraging applications from candidates with a solid consultancy background and who are ready for the next step in their professional development with a well renowned and successful international contractor.

The role will be positioned at our Melbourne Head Office in Hawthorn; however, we are flexible on the position being based at one of our other state office locations in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney or Perth.

Reporting to the General Manager Engineering, the position will be responsible for carrying out designs and developing solutions with the appropriate requirements of the bids or projects in accordance with Design Management Procedures.

Your Opportunity

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be accountable for:

  • Supervise and integrate external engineering consultants for projects and bids in accordance with Design Management Procedures.
  • Develop appropriate construction methods together with appropriate plant selection and temporary work solutions in collaboration with specialist and project personnel.
  • Identify, assess and mitigate safety and environmental hazards that may arise during the fabrication, installation and use of temporary and permanent works via formal Safety in Design process. Design the works to reduce to as low as reasonably practicable such safety and environmental hazards.
  • Develop specifications and specify inspection and testing requirements for designed structures.
  • Prepare documentation and presentation material for prequalification’s, bids and projects including calculations, reports, specifications and drawings.
  • Provide feedback to the project personnel on construction details and technical documentation.
  • Direct and supervise draftspersons as required in the performance of these roles and responsibilities.
  • Provide input into programming and estimating functions.
  • Verify temporary works designs prepared by other design engineers, drafters and modellers.
  • Assist with project and business development initiatives and client liaison as required

Requirements For This Role Are
  • Relevant tertiary Engineering qualification.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer in the area of Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the construction industry with exposure to construction, costing, estimating and planning.
  • Demonstrated capability in development of innovative concepts for solutions to technical, complex issues
  • Competent understanding of Australian and International codes and standards, Safety in Design process and risk and contingency assessment.
  • Listens and takes personal responsibility for accurately communicating information and expressing ideas and innovations in a clear and concise manner, using appropriate means.
  • Plans and organizes their own time and tasks correctly undertaking activities to meet objectives.
  • Works effectively in a team to achieve team objectives. Demonstrates a flexible approach to changing situations, requirements and priorities. Remains effective and resilient in the face of challenge.
  • Strong oral and written presentation ability linked with sound relationship and integrity record
  • Competent in use of relevant software such as MS Teams, Office and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of engineering software such as AutoCad, Wallap, SpaceGass and Tedds or equivalent
  • Good understanding of BIM modelling software such as REVIT
  • Hold valid working rights in Australia
