About the role:

What our WooliesX technology team has achieved in the past 2 years is just outstanding! We are now looking for an Engineering leader, who can continue to push the boundaries and take our Engineering Practice to the next level. 

Reporting and accountable to our Chief Digital Technology Officer, Tthe Practice Leader - Engineering is a newly created position, accountable for leading potentially the best engineering practice in Australia. There are currently 300+ experienced technology professionals in the team with projections for significant growth over the next 12 months. The Engineering agile practice is the largest in WooliesX and has a significant reach, influence and impact across the Woolworths Group ecosystem. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing horizontal leadership and coaching to a significant team (300+) that empowers and influences, whilst fostering a culture that encourages openness, innovation and experimental ways of working.
  • Collaborating with WooliesX technology leaders and Group IT to deliver the engineering team strategy and influencing the way technology is transforming both the way we work and serve our customers.
  • Acting as a thought leader for the Engineering practice, ensuring the team are aware of future strategy and adopting industry leading practices.
  • Owning, developing and implementing innovative technology across the organisation, and supporting the ongoing performance of those systems.
  • Adapting, expanding and challenging our current technology offering, ensuring it remains competitive in the rapidly changing ecommerce / retail environment.
  • Play an influencer role in driving through the future strategy of engineering 
  • Manage key stakeholder relationships across WooliesX and the wider business.
  • As Practice Leader, identify the business value of each initiative to ensure that the right value is being delivered at the right time by the squads.
  • Coach key stakeholders to understand the Agile Model and become aware of the flow of work and value through the agile System.
  • Ensure there is a continuous pipeline of talent and career pathways within the team.
  • Develop and maintain a network of industry contacts and research industry trends, competitors, IT products and makes strategic and tactical recommendations

About you:

  • The success of your role will rely on your ability to adapt to fast changing environments and drive the profile technology as a primary part of the business
  • A technology leader (CTO, Engineering Director) with a strong background in engineering.
  • A thought leader with a passion for digital transformation, innovation and process improvement.
  • Thrives in an end to end complex (ecosystem) business environment
  • An inspirational leader of significant cross functional teams.
  • An ability to lead the practice whilst also maintaining a strong delivery focus
  • Highly influential with the ability to develop productive internal relationships at the highest levels across a complex matrixed organisation
  • Operationally resilient, with a proven track record of implementing effective business strategies in a fast paced, commercial context.
  • A high level of personal confidence and gravitas with the ability to build mutually beneficial relationships with external vendors and partners.
  • A proven track record of managing and delivering change as well as positive outcomes.
  • Horizontal leadership capabilities and the ability to work well in a highly pressured situation.
  • Executive level presentation, communication, planning, and leadership skills.
