About Your Role

Thales has been supporting the Australian Defence Force with Small Arms for over 100 years and is now working to deliver them the Next Generation of Close Combat Family of Weapons integrated with other supporting soldier systems. We have built up a team passionate about developing products to equip soldiers with transformational capabilities for the challenges of the modern battlefield and we’re now looking for like-minded, engineers and technical staff to join us in this important task. The Chief of Army summarised this last year when he recognised this by confirming that what we do is “ fundamental to assuring Army’s competitive capability edge into the future”.

Our Integrated Weapons and Sensor business is currently seeking an experienced R&D Hardware Engineer (Electronics/Mechatronics) to be based at our Lithgow site. This role will focus on the design, development, integration and testing of electrical and electronic systems for the implementation of the next generation of weapon products we will be designing and manufacturing.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing, integrating and testing electronic systems, in particular combat and communication systems, for implementation on the Digital Battle Rifle platform with guidance and support. This includes:
    • Providing technical input into and assisting with the development of system-level architectures
    • Requirements development and analysis
    • Ensuring designs meet applicable regulatory and customer requirements
    • Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers
    • Planning, co-ordinating and conducting developmental tests
    • Support to analyse and assess resource and schedule requirements Assisting with project planning hours and cost estimates
  • Completing on time, quality designs of electrical systems and also reporting

How About You?

  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics)
  • Experience in the design and integration of electrical and electronic systems
  • Technical knowledge of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in one or more of the areas below:
  • Design of electrical systems and elements for military platforms
  • Interpretation and analysis of electronics systems drawings and technical documents
  • Serial communication and data bus protocols
  • Best practices for EMI reduction, shielding and hardening
  • Electrical circuit protection and earthing strategies
  • PCB design and layout, circuit simulation,
  • Strong analytical / problem solving skills
  • Experience and skills in authoring/reviewing technical documentation (engineering reports, test instructions, test reports)
  • Any experience in soldier systems and/or weapons related systems would be desirable
  • And any exposure to combat electronic systems and electrical wiring design and construction principles and practices would be advantageous
