We are looking for a Principal Advisor Estimating to lead our underground estimating capability with Rio Tinto Projects. This is an unique opportunity for a person who has significant underground mining experience coupled with projects and estimating experience.

Reporting to the Chief Advisor Estimating and working in a collaborative and exciting environment within Rio Tinto Projects, you will be
  • Accountable to foster a relationship of trust and respect with key product group stakeholders, engineering service providers, contractors and project and services teams.
  • Accountable for the quality of cost estimating across all projects in Rio Tinto’s Copper and Diamonds Global portfolio as well as any other underground mining estimates produced by the group.
  • Required to review estimates provided by others as well as Lead Conceptual, Order Of Magnitude, Pre-Feasibility Study, Feasibility Study and Definitive Estimates and schedules where required.
  • Required to prepare first principles estimate for underground mining works such as lateral development, mass excavation and production level construction.
  • Providing expert advice and support where the size and complexity of project/projects is significant enough to warrant strategic leadership of the function within the owner’s team.
  • Developing and improving Rio Tinto Project’s approach to estimating.


What You Will Bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Extensive underground mining experience in a Project Controls Engineer, Estimating, Mining Engineering position is greatly sort after
  • Degree in Engineering or Quantity surveying or equivalent underground mining experience is desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating software, in particular Expert Estimator, is desirable
  • Analytical skills, with attention to detail, problem-solving and ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to research, compare and analyse voluminous and complex management and financial information
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Excellent written and spoken communication and presentation skills, must be able to meet and respond to requests from senior project staff and business unit managers in a timely manner.
  • Ability to effectively lead and manage small groups of people for defined periods across geographically dispersed areas
