The company
Our client is a globally established market leader in highly specialised medical products, featuring a large range of innovative designs. The business has a long history of growth within this space and with a strong market position is looking poised to continue this upward traction. In order to remain a solid competitor on the global scene the business is looking to bring in a highly driven Head of Engineering to take complete ownership over the R&D function and lead the group into the next phase of growth.

The role
Reporting into the executive leadership group and directly managing the R&D team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Day-to-day leadership of the R&D team. Ensuring the group has adequate resources and motivation to develop innovative products.
  • Governance over the planning of R&D opportunities in accordance to product deliverables, working in line with marketing and financial resources.
  • Ensuring correct design transfer processes are observed from R&D, testing and validation through to manufacturing.
  • Establishment of a skills and capability evaluation of the R&D team, identifying opportunities to add new skills and experience or upskilling of current staff.
  • Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders from initial research through to early concept stages of new materials, parts and products.

Your background

In order to be successful in this role you will be:

  • Must hold Tertiary qualifications in Engineering; Chemical, Materials, Polymers preferred, however other relevant engineering backgrounds will be considered.
  • Further qualifications such as an MBA will be highly desirable.
  • Must be a strong people manager with proven experience leading teams of R&D engineers towards achieving product development milestones and stage gates.
  • Commercially minded; able to assess competitors, identify opportunities and establish strategies and plans.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of plastics and polymers, exposure to other materials used within medical grade products will be highly desirable.
  • Ideally you will come from the medical device/technology industry, other industry experience such as automotive or highly regulated products will also be considered.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with a diplomatic and conservative approach to communicating and rolling out deliverables.
