About The Role

This is an exciting role assisting the Engineering Manager and the Governance & Technical Stewardship (GTS) Superintendent in providing technical expertise, support, peer reviews and solutions to the port operations functions.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager at Port Hedland, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing specialist expertise in mechanical engineering to ensure that all BHPBIO policies, standards, and procedures are followed, and external statutory requirements are met.
  • Management and delivery of planned outputs that consistently satisfy all cost, time, quality, safety, and environmental requirements
  • Development, review, and approval of reports, calculations, standards, technical specifications, functional specifications, and procedures
  • Supporting and guiding engineers to take action to rectify problems, either by corrective action or by proposing a solution to the relevant team manager
  • Offering mentorship and guidance to graduate engineers
  • Actively thinking about and implementing improvements to the department’s work practices
  • Ensuring that knowledge sharing is included in the department tasks and part of the deliverables for all jobs
  • Development of strategies for engineering to develop and benchmark; technology, plant and equipment, systems and processes

About You

To be successful in this role you will possess the following:
  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering
  • Good analytical skills to enable effective problem solving and sharing of solutions within the department
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively manage relationships with various stakeholders
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design (to relevant Australian standards), preferably with dumping, stacking, reclaiming, screening and ship loading equipment
  • Previous field experience in a similar role.
  • A current Australian C class drivers licence.


If you choose the residential option, you will be based in the coastal town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia. The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities.

The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife. Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini national Park. As this is a residential position you will also be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies.

If you choose the FIFO option you will be based at Port Hedland on a fly-in fly-out 5:2 4:3 roster. Flexible rosters will also be considered. The outstanding facilities at the FIFO villages include; a fully equipped gym, TV lounge and games rooms. Additionally you will have access to the state of the art aquatic and sporting facilities in the town of Port Hedland. All rooms at the villages have their own en-suite bathroom, television, refrigerator and air-conditioning.
