Job Summary

The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs (a.k.a. Labs) team is looking for a skilled engineer to join our team as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) in Brisbane, Australia. In this role, you will be part of a diverse and geographically distributed team of engineers; working in cooperation with Red Hat Consulting and the open source community. You will work with some of the industry's newest technologies around containers and industry leading enterprise open source solutions, including Ansible, Containers, Docker, Kubernetes (k8s), and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, software defined networking and traditional networking equipment, core servers or virtualization, operating systems, and Red Hat OpenStack applied to all major public cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, as well as our own internal private cloud. You will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating our Labs' infrastructure through automation, infrastructure-as-code (IaC), and GitOps. You will code and automate the traditional roles of a system administrator at scale. As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, your responsibility will be split between using automation to operate the global Labs hosting infrastructure, and in engineering novel solutions to site reliability challenges. Applying a software engineering mindset is key to continuously improving our Labs offering at a global scale, utilizing concepts like GitOps, IaC, agile infrastructure, and DevOps. And you'll do it the open source way, serving as an open source champion to help enable the broader communities to benefit from our work and contribute to the further development of our implementations.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and expand the various client and server-side frameworks related to the Open Innovation Labs solutions running on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and public cloud infrastructure
  • Be a lead contributor to automation of infrastructure and application management, and help showcase best in class IaC and GitOps implementations, using Ansible and other modern technologies like k8s operators
  • Work with a team of architects, consultants, and partners to design, deploy, and utilize business solutions built on Red Hat's enterprise open source technical stack
  • Work with Red Hat's Quality Engineering (QE) and Product teams to increase value and stability for our customers and users
  • Provide Labs customer project support for the infrastructure the delivery team is using
  • Evaluate solutions and technologies; make recommendations and present reports
  • Maintain technical competency in all aspects of our technology and market
  • Mentor junior engineers at Red Hat, partners, and communities
  • Contribute to, develop, and expand Red Hat's SRE practices and tooling

Required Skills
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Experience with open source software, either as a user or as a developer
  • Understanding of distributed systems and common distributed system failure domains
  • Active online presence with an interest in open source community involvement
  • Experience with Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), e.g., Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and virtualization technologies like Red Hat Virtualization, oVirt, KVM, and VMware
  • Solid background in computer networking, computer security, Linux and UNIX operating systems, public cloud solutions, system administration, continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) pipelines, and Git or GitOps
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Lead collaborative and meritocrital thinking to determine technical strategy and direction
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and follow industry trends
  • Ability to work on your own and as part of a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English
