JOB DESCRIPTION

Finisar is a high-tech company that develops and manufactures optical communication products used in fibre networks around the world that provide the backbone of today’s digital communications, carrying the internet, mobile, video and cloud computing.

The role

The purpose of this role is to provide technical manufacturing expertise to the selection and procurement of instruments, equipment and components to be used directly on our production lines or incorporated into the special purpose machines that we design and construct.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cost estimations for capital (CAPEX) budgeting of equipment used for the business financial projections and spending approval process
  • Analyse the requirements of equipment projects, identify and plan for all components, instruments and sub-systems. Define the requirements in a controlled Bill of Materials
  • In collaboration with design engineers, identify and select suppliers for equipment and materials
  • Obtain quotations, negotiate pricing, lead-times and performance requirements with suppliers.
  • Select suppliers and options to meet the timeline of project and budgetary constraints.
  • Create and submit requests for CAPEX expenditure using the CAR process.
  • Provide cost, receipt, use, and location data to the finance team for the financial asset register.
  • Organise and manage project labour, the delivery of materials and equipment to meet the schedule of equipment construction projects
  • Schedule and coordinate routine maintenance of equipment with Production and line leaders
  • Maintain equipment utilisation by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special service.

Education requirements

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical, Mechatronics, Instrumentation or similar field of engineering including topics of:
    • Digital image processing, Signal processing, Automation, Process control.
  • A postgraduate in Master of Management or similar business qualification including topics of:
    • Project management, innovation, leading lean initiatives, effective communications.

Essential skills

  • Previous work experience in a manufacturing environment
  • The ability to work independently and within team structures across multiple disciplines
  • Strong organisational, analytical and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Procurement Lifecycle phases including planning, contracting/sourcing and contract management and disposal.
  • Experience with Oracle, SAP or similar ERP and its functional modules for procurement and for order management

Desirable skills

  • Familiarity with 3D CAD packages, with a preference for SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with Product Data Management systems, with a preference for SolidWorks PDM
  • Knowledge of:
    • Instrumentation;
    • Mechatronics
    • Equipment safety systems
    • Project management
    • Precision equipment
    • Vision systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing practice
