THE ROLE

TransAlta Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Canadian-based TransAlta Corporation, currently operates and maintains 6 power stations in Western Australia. With a 20-year history in the State, we provide safe, clean and reliable power to large mining and industrial customers.

We are currently looking for a Senior Engineer, Development to assist with the development of renewable and thermal energy projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong emphasis on renewables generation technology and experience in the development of renewable projects.

The Senior Engineer, Development is a key member of the Australian Growth team with two primary accountabilities: renewable and thermal power project design and long-term energy assessment. This position provides single point accountability for conceptual/development engineering for potential acquisitions or development of new generation facilities. In addition, this role will require researching and keeping current with technological, environmental, and social changes that impact the ownership and development of electrical generation facilities.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop optimum economic and technical power plant configurations to meet TransAlta and customer requirements.
  • Complete life cycle cost analysis of project alternatives (equipment selection, eg. turbine siting, turbine type, wake losses, environmental / stakeholder / landowner constraints, collection system and substation layout), and to provide risk assessment, site optimization and site comparisons including: Class 5 and 4 capital, O&M, performance and schedule estimates which are accurate, achievable and have appropriate justification and due diligence
  • Prepare preliminary Design Basis Memorandum or Functional Specifications for use by EPC(M) contractors and to provide technical support to the Project Manager. Ensuring the original economic and equipment performance and flexibility is maintained through the detailed design work.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to projects in design, construction, commissioning and testing while assisting the EPC/ EPCM develop a detailed Design Basis Memorandum and specifications, Class 3 cost estimate, support major equipment bidding and purchase contracting and Long Term Service Agreement negotiation.
  • Acquire current knowledge of technological, environmental, and social changes affecting the power industry. Assisting manager with comprehensive research designed to support the development and maintenance of the corporate growth strategy and to perform competitor analysis.
  • Recommend potential sites for future Greenfield development; considering transmission, resource, permitting, land/stakeholder potential constraints and to provide inputs and documentation for site control, permitting and regulatory activities including: maps, locations for resource monitoring, facility conceptual layouts and designs for Class 5 production estimates and loss calculations.
  • Ownership and development of the technical portions of customer proposals.
  • Assist with power supply, thermal energy and gas contract strategy and support contract negotiations as well as the environmental permitting process.
  • Build and maintain customer, partner, and supplier relationship working closely with the Business development team.
  • Provide due diligence for potential acquisitions involving facilities completed or under construction; review of technical risks of construction, capital and operating estimates, and operational and performance data, reports and contracts for and to generate the long term costs, performance and condition based risk for the asset.


About You
  • Degree and professional designation in engineering (CPEng) mechanical, or electrical and / or PMP designation
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering and project management experience, having worked on thermal, wind, solar and/or battery energy storage projects. Strong emphasis on renewables experience preferred.
  • Strong statistical background, fundamentals and understanding of industry guidelines for resource, errors and trends in industry.
  • Good understanding of third-party expertise and techniques for resource analysis
  • Exceptional analytical skills using spreadsheets and plant performance evaluation software, processes, and programs to manipulate large amounts of data and develop tools and procedures for data quality assurance.
  • Expert in specialized software for wind flow modelling as well as skills in MS suite including Project or Primavera
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wind, solar and/or battery storage plant equipment and their performance
  • Expertise in conducting contract review and negotiation
  • Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting project requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required for presentations, report writing and proposal writing. This includes the ability to express technical concepts to laypersons.
  • Strong understanding of plant performance and the impact of technology on marketing efforts.
