Job Description

About the role:

This position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring the fire safety compliance and upgrades program of existing buildings and regulated premises to achieve an acceptable standard of health and safety for the community and Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing the fire safety program in the Parramatta local government area to ensure compliance and/or upgrades of existing buildings and regulated premises with the applicable standards in order to achieve an acceptable standard of health and safety.
  • Maintain the fire safety program developed for the Parramatta local government area.
  • Review Council’s records and inspect existing buildings for the assessment of risk to life safety in the event of a fire as per the requirements of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
  • Review development applications with regard to Clause 93 and 94 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2000.
  • Undertake inspections, investigations and assist with statutory enforcement in response to service requests and when required including those referred to Council via customer complaints and Fire & Rescue NSW within delegated powers and legislative instruments and issue notices and orders and
  • take enforcement action as necessary in fire safety related matters.
  • Provide specialist fire safety technical advice to Council staff and external customers as required or directed
  • Represent the Council in appropriate Courts and forums as required or directed.
  • Prepare reports to Council on fire related matters as required or directed.
  • Ensure that Council’s policies, plans and statutory provisions relevant to the position are consistently applied and implemented.
Key Skills:
  • Working knowledge of the Building Code of Australia, Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 and Local Government Act 1993 as it applies to building work and in particular fire safety provisions.
  • Ability to interpret relevant legislation and policies with the ability to make appropriate decisions bearing in mind the circumstances and legislative requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in operation of various software and computer systems (e.g: office Word, Excel, Outlook, and Pathways, GIS, ICON) and specific technology (e.g: Digital Cameras and Video equipment).
