BBE Consulting is a global group of consulting engineers specialising in underground mine ventilation, refrigeration, energy management and associated health and safety. With over 30 years' experience and offices in Australia, Canada and South Africa, BBE is considered a world leading services provider in the mining industry. BBE works on a variety of projects from operational mines to large greenfield projects, across all commodities. Our projects include mine ventilation design and optimisation, ventilation modelling, ventilation-on-demand, fan engineering, refrigeration engineering, contaminant management, energy management and occupational health and safety.

BBE has identified the need to establish an underground coal industry business and thus this has presented the opportunity to lead the growth of a coal focused business unit while continuing current client’s services in the eastern regions. With this in mind BBE is thus looking to establish an office in Brisbane with a dual purpose of servicing the coal industry and provide easy access to existing clients in the Eastern states.

BBE is looking for an enthusiastic Principal engineer with experience in mine ventilation consulting, engineering design and management to lead our growing consulting team in Brisbane. This position is ideal for a professional engineer with an aptitude for managing a team of specialised ventilation and refrigeration engineers with more than 12 years’ experience in the mine ventilation industry and at least 5 years’ experience in people and business management.

The main tasks of the role will include but are not limited to:

  • Participate a in relevant business development activities, client engagement and networking and internal development initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining client and partner relationships.
  • Manage a team of specialist engineers, day-to-day consulting office tasks, project priorities, client interaction and engineering tasks.
  • Participate in and optimise technical projects including mine ventilation planning and engineering, including airflow, fans, refrigeration, cooling, heating, occupational hygiene, legislation, fires, simulation software in both hard rock and coal mines.
  • Prepare and optimise designs, project schedules, capital and operating cost estimates and provide value-engineering opportunities to clients.
  • Ensuring projects are executed within scope, budget and schedule.
  • Project management on technical study and design work - internal and client meetings and presentations, report writing, technical reviews, report edits and progress reviews.
  • Prepare proposals, control proposals and POs, contracting, project resourcing and management.
  • Develop and maintain financial tracking, control and projection systems, monitor annual budget against expenses and income.
  • Manage finances including cash-flow, invoicing, expenses report to the Australasia MD.
  • Continuously monitor market forces and competitor actions and developments to ensure a competitive advantage and reputation as specialist consultant.
  • Identify and manage business risks and ensure relevant professional and property insurances, IP and document protection.


The ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Post graduate degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • Graduate Diploma in Mine Ventilation or equivalent industry qualification
  • Current professional engineering registration
  • Proficient in Mine Ventilation Software (Ventsim Visual / VUMA)
  • Minimum of 12-years’ experience in Mine Ventilation and refrigeration experience
  • Previous experience in underground hard rock mine planning in various mining methods (SLOS, SLC, Block Caving LHOS, etc.)
  • Previous experience in underground coal ventilation planning in various mining methods (Longwall, bord and pillar, etc.)
  • Experience in a consulting company with demonstrated experience in mine ventilation services and offerings.
  • Proven experience in leading and motivating a team of dynamic professionals.
  • Consulting office management and co-ordination
  • Australian company directorship experience, training/qualifications or registration
  • Proven capability and experience in analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Experience in Business and Financial management
  • Demonstrated experience in proposal writing, contract and project management.
  • Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel; PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint etc)
  • Several published technical papers
  • Current and unrestricted permanent right to work in Australia.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Valid Passport.
