This is an exciting opportunity to get in at the ground level of a rapidly expanding, dynamic, global green energy business. Fortescue Future Industries is currently undertaking a rapid expansion and are seeking applications for a Principal Electrical Design Engineer.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role will have an emphasis on concentrated solar power design and management.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Manage, design, develop, create and maintain small-scale through to large-scale construction projects in a safe, timely and sustainable manner.
  • Develop assessment and management of risk throughout engineering project life cycles including operational assets.
  • Conduct on site investigations and analyse data (maps, reports, tests, drawings and other).
  • Build strong relationships with local and international stakeholders.
  • Proactively deliver on the company’s stretch targets.
  • Develop technical specifications to meet project specific objectives.
  • Develop technical and feasibility studies and development of drawings that satisfy technical specifications.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, documents, specifications and scopes.
  • Management of contractors and sub-contractors, including the preparation, adjudication, award and execution of tender packages for various stages of design and project execution.
  • Resolution of technical and design issues.
  • Liaising with a range of key stakeholders on all technical aspects of projects.
  • Tracking progress and performance against agreed specific and strategic KPI’s for the team and contractors.
  • Comply with guidelines and regulations including permits, safety etc. and deliver technical files and other technical documentation as required.

In order to be successful in this role:

Candidates must be able to bring a flexible mindset, challenge traditional thinking, and be prepared to work outside of their comfort zone.

  • Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • Eight years’ experience in a similar role in the solar power generation and thermal energy storage industry, with Concentrated Solar Power experience preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in providing comprehensive design services for the full project lifecycle from feasibility through to construction in projects across the globe.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment in collaboration with other like-minded team members and adjacent projects teams.
  • Design and execution experience required.
  • A critical appreciation of the risk assessment and management process, including communication of risk to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Record of exploring the unusual and challenging the norm.
  • Strong awareness in the development of project schedules and considerations of regulatory approvals.
  • A strong capability in adapting to multidisciplinary requirements, and communicating a range of Engineering concepts to a range of expertise.
  • Government liaison experience preferred.
  • Budget management skills with the ability to write and audit proposals.
  • Strong team skills and willingness to travel for short periods.
