A/ About us

We are experts in the river, estuarine, coastal and maritime sectors, providing consultancy advice and civil and structural design services to clients in a number of relevant sectors, including (but not limited to): ports and harbours; coastal and flood defence; water management; land reclamation; dredging and material management; planning and policy setting; and all other forms of water's edge development (i.e. energy, recreation, military, telecommunication etc).

We are looking for a Senior/Principal Engineer or Scientist in Coastal Management & Policy in our growing team of experts with information as follows:

Technical Activities:
  • Provide technical direction during the initiation, management and supervision of coastal/maritime management assignments (including construction supervision) in the context of project requirements of delivery on time and within budget, whilst achieving target utilisation (chargeability).
  • Prepare commercial, technical and financial proposals to undertake major and minor engineering/scientific/environmental management projects, generally related to coastal and maritime works such as port and harbour works, coastal protection and management measures, seawalls, and the like.
  • Prepare work plans around undertaking such projects to plan the appropriate level of resources and scheduling to complete the works in the required time frame.
  • Conduct appropriate investigations, studies, analyses, detailed design and documentation, and recommend actions.
  • Participate in development of local technical systems and standards, and integration with broader Royal HaskoningDHV knowledge base.
  • Supervise and instruct junior or less experienced engineers and other sub-professionals (drafters) in technical works as well as assist in professional development.
  • Check and review other's works (both inside and outside the firm) as required, ensure quality deliverables in line with RHDHV's standards.
  • Provide high level technical advice to engineers and scientists from other disciplines and co-ordinate the activities of other scientists, engineers and designers.
  • Undertake all office and company procedures necessary for the company to properly conduct its business (completing time sheets, leave applications, job records, invoicing).
Knowledge Sharing and Transfer:
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the coastal 'market', to ensure that Haskoning Australia is always aware of new developments and market changes, and the clients that are operating in this sector.
  • Ensure that knowledge is transferred and shared internally on developments in the coastal sector, both with your team and others within the company.
  • Create and/or lead the creation of products, services and/or working methods which can be characterized as innovative / leading edge.
  • Provide encouragement and learning opportunities for staff to support ongoing and future business and to further career development.
Personal Development:
  • Active in growing both your own and also Haskoning Australia's technical/ professional excellence.
  • Make an annual plan related to own scope or vital strategic issue, which will be embedded in the AG's business plan.
  • Undertake continuing self-education as required by Institution of Engineers Australia (50 hours minimum equivalent per annum, 150 hours over 3 years).
  • Participate in in-house training in company procedures, workplace safety instruction and various site safety courses as required.
  • Related development and performance targets will be established with the Director of Advice Group.
  • Ability to travel for one or two days to Newcastle or other NSW (or interstate) destinations on a regular basis (once every week or two), and potentially internationally (occasionally) for project assignments or meetings, as needed to meet client requirements.
  • Personal timesheet, travel requests, expenses claim, application for leave etc. in accordance with the Haskoning Australia operating rules and conditions.
Other Duties: Carry out any duties, which your line manager may reasonably request within the broad parameters of your role.

C/ Job requirements

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Essential: Engineering/Scientific Degree; Experience in coastal management and policy
  • Desirable: Post graduate qualifications; Specialization in climate change adaptation and/or environmental assessment
  • Highly effective technical and practical scientific or engineering skills in the relevant disciplines of coastal policy and management
  • Provide direction and advice on technical matters, teaches, mentors others in the team
