About the role

As the Lead Wagon Engineer you will join the Rollingstock Engineering Group responsible for leading a specialist team of Wagon Engineers to provide the organisation with: safety in design, engineering design and signoff, risk management, engineering and maintenance standards, technical specification, tenders, review of rollingstock standards, technical expertise, and delivering value creation through innovative technical solutions and products.

Responsibilities including:

  • Lead Occupational Health and Safety within area of responsibility and actively participate in the development and implementation of hazard elimination or minimization strategies
  • Manage staff and contractors ensure compliance with Pacific National policy and procedures
  • Manage, develop and approve engineering design, technical standards and specifications for the business.
  • Provide Engineering input for the procurement of new wagons, tendering for new business and modification of wagons
  • Connect and lead stakeholders, (regulatory bodies, rail infrastructure managers, suppliers, industry bodies, customers, etc.)
  • Collaboration with the reliability team to create reliability engineering and condition monitoring regimes that support superior asset performance outcomes
  • Provide technical expertise to ensure Compliance to all external standards identified by external bodies including ONRSR, OTSI, ARC, ARTC RISBB etc) associated with wagons
  • Recognise opportunities and take action to develop effective relationships with business partners (internal and external) and other stakeholders to meet business goals.

About you

You will be degree qualified Engineer with a background working with Rollingstock. You will be a natural leader who will take accountability from day one, supporting and guiding your team of subject matter experts and external contractors whilst managing a number of key and at times conflicting priorities. You will have strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence outcomes to ensure business and customer needs are met.

In addition:

  • Degree qualifications in Engineering (Mechanical)
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in leading teams of professionals providing technical and engineering services
  • Knowledge of the Rail Industry Safety & Standards Board (RISSB), American Association Railroads (AAR) & Australian Standards related to rolling stock safety, design and maintenance requirements
  • Proven experience in engineering management, preferably in a rail industry/heavy industry/related transport environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high degree of initiative, innovation and flexibility.
  • Expert knowledge of relevant legislative requirements
  • Expert knowledge of rolling stock design. Technical skills that must be applied in this role include a detailed knowledge of structures, fatigue, failure analysis, welding and other fabrication techniques, vehicle dynamics, design, rollingstock standards, and mechanics.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and lead complex change management frameworks in a technical environment
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise varied tasks to meet customer requirements.
  • CPEng (Preferred) and RPEQ (Preferred)
  • Drivers Licence
  • Flexibility for interstate travel as required
