About Your Role

Would you like to be designing the next generation of weapon systems for Australian Defence Force and other international customers?

This Design Engineer (Mechanical) role is within our Integrated Weapons and Sensors (IWS) team which is a business segment within the Vehicles and Tactical Systems (VTS) domain. The IWS Business Segment supplies weapon systems as well as maintenance, repair, and upgrade services to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and exports to Government and non-Government customers in the international market. IWS also designs and manufactures Lithgow Arms brand of civil rifles.

The purpose of the role is to support the design of the next generation of light weight and thermally managed weapon systems using the latest manufacturing techniques providing a step change in performance.

  • Design and development of products and processes on the basis of appropriate calculations, tests and simulations, in line with IWS Engineering Governance requirements
  • The creation and management of technical data for concept development, modelling, prototyping, tooling and production
  • Preparation of documents/artefacts in order to meet targets relating to cost, schedule and quality
  • Application of resources and methods needed for the development of models, prototypes and design for manufacture.
  • Participation in product integration and qualification phases
  • Ensure the application of appropriate design and engineering libraries, tools and platforms at each stage of the process.

How About You?

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or equivalent
  • A thorough knowledge of 3D modelling and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing is required (preferably using AutoCad Inventor software)
  • Significant experience in a precision manufacturing environment
  • Analysis of design concepts and generation of technical reports including trade-off analysis and FEA experience.
  • General knowledge of weapon/firearm design and function- particularly in a military environment is highly beneficial.
  • Design for additive manufacturing experience would also be beneficial.
  • Strong report and technical document writing skills.
