JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a site supervisor to manage the construction of 5 dwellings in Pormpuraaw between May and October 2021. These dates may change depending on access into the community and the construction progress.

The successful candidate should be willing to live in Pormpuraaw in contractor accommodation for the duration of the project for ideally a 3 weeks on, 1 week off roster. However, this roster could be flexible and negotiable. The Project manager or another supervisor would takeover during your leave time and would likely overlap for a few days each side.

Your role would be the on-site supervisor to manage the construction and safety compliance of approximately 6- 10 subcontractors at any given time. You would also be responsible for purchasing food and consumables to stock the contractor accommodation.

Duties include:

  • Opening and lock the site each day and conducting the daily toolbox talk.
  • Conducting inductions for new workers and visitors
  • Conducting site inspections and reporting
  • Coordinating monthly emergency drills
  • Managing equipment and materials on site
  • Recording a daily site diary
  • Checking deliveries and inspecting workmanship
  • Managing the cleanliness and organization of the site
  • Managing local indigenous labour/ work experience personnel on- site
  • Assisting with general labour tasks as may be required, and depending on your skills (eg fencing, earthworks, landscaping, furniture assembly)
  • Purchasing food from the local store and accommodation facilities (more detail later)
  • Manage people and accommodation requirements for people coming and leaving site (ensure there are sufficient rooms available as staff level change)
  • Liaise with the local community representives from time to time.
  • Manage any local COVID restrictions/ requirements that may be in place

Applicants should have some or all of the following skills

  • Background in construction, and preferably a trade qualification
  • Experience as a supervisor or foreman
  • Willing to work remotely for extended periods
  • Willing to do general/ miscellaneous construction tasks and/ or assist other subcontractors.
  • Experience with health and safety compliance in construction, Preferably a cert IV WHS, or similar
  • Current First Aid certificate (or willing to get it prior to starting)
  • Competency in operating a telehandler, bobcat, excavator or forklift would be desirable
  • Ability to read construction plans and specifications
  • Competent with using computers (as many of our reporting functions are done online.

The site work hours are generally 6am to 5pm, 7 days per week, but may have downtime depending on construction activities. Accommodation is in a contractor camp with own room and ensuite, and shared kitchen and living facilities with up to 20 other contractors working in the town. You would be responsible for ensuring all contractors working on our project maintain the accommodation and respect the rules, as well as stocking food for our contractors from the local store.

Pormpuraaw is an aboriginal community and is strictly no alcohol, except for the sportsman club where limited alcohol may be consumed on-premises. Part of your role would be to ensure contractors are following this rule.

Wages can be negotiated depending on the roster you are willing to work to, and your level of skills and experience, starting from $1400 per week. The wage range is what is proposed by Indeed, but we can consider payment outside that range depending on your skills, experience and time on site.

Roster must be no less than 2 weeks on, but the longer you are able to stay on-site the better, and we can be flexible on the roster as needed. We will pay for flights between Pormpuraaw and Cairns and/ or pay for fuel and travel allowance if driving, as well as all accommodation and food while on- site.

Contract length: 6 months

Job Duties:

  • Consult blueprints, designs, and client instructions to develop construction plans for the team
  • Manage construction sites, ensuring that workers adhere to construction plans and safety codes
  • Work with key stakeholders (e.g. owners, developers, contractors) to ensure project completion within budget and deadlines
  • Other duties as requested
