Civil Construction Apprenticeship

Our Company

The Department of Transport gives us a singular, integrated focus on tackling the big issues – from improving buses in growing suburbs to making it easier to walk and cycle places and embrace new technology. We do not plan or operate our road, tram, or rail systems separately – we run a transport network with this current position available in Donald.


  • Traffic controller duties – involving prolonged periods of standing
  • Working on feet for most of the day, prolonged periods walking/standing
  • Working on hard surfaces such as concrete and asphalt for prolonged periods
  • Walking/standing on steep/sloping/uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladders
  • Loading/unloading signs/equipment/material on/off truck
  • Sign erection – involving lifting and holding signs above shoulder height
  • Filling, lifting, and placing items up to 25kg
  • Handling/operating equipment in confined/awkward positions
  • Removing dead animals (such as kangaroos)
  • Digging, shoveling, sweeping, crowbar, jackhammers, electric drills, angle grinders, chainsaws, sledgehammers
  • Compaction plate/wacker rammer
  • Concrete troweling/screeding

Skills and Experience

  • Willing to undertake an apprenticeship to fulfil the requirements of Certificate III in Civil Construction.
  • A current Victorian driver’s licence
  • Willingness to obtain a Medium Rigid licence (mandatory) or Heavy Rigid Licence (desirable)
  • Ability to undertake all inherent requirements of the position (detailed above)
  • Willing to undertake mandatory pre-screening test including medical assessment, drug and alcohol screening, driver history checks and reference checks.
  • Relevant experience in civil works
  • Construction induction card
  • Traffic management certification
  • Driving:
    • Use of 8-10 tonne depot truck or tractor/loader
    • Tasks range from frequent climbing in/out of cabin to constant driving for several hours
