About the role:

Nova Systems currently has an ongoing immediate, permanent opportunity for an experienced System Safety Manager to work on a major Defence acquisition program based in Adelaide. You will provide senior level systems safety engineering consultancy services to Nova's clients supporting this Maritime acquisition opportunity.

What you will be involved in:

  • Systems Engineering and Safety Engineering;
  • Architecting, negotiating and managing the Safety Case achievement to meet client and regulatory requirements;
  • Guide and facilitate the application of system safety analytical techniques for Haz ID and Hazard Analysis via methods including HAZOPS, Functional Hazard Analysis, FTA/ETA + Bow-Tie, FMECA;
  • Facilitate the operation of the Safety Working Group to gain stakeholder input and endorsement of safety hazards and classification through to risk retention;
  • Ensuring the system level engineering safety analysis correctly reflects the systems as designed, implemented and operated;
  • Defining the program level approach to safety assurance, in conjunction with the senior engineering delegate;
  • Working as part of the safety team to ensure the safety activities are integrated with the broader systems engineering programs;
  • Review and guide development of vendor safety document deliveries to ensure safety hazards are appropriate and mitigated so far as reasonably practical, to a level acceptable to the customer; and
  • Assist with training or mentoring of junior consultants, clients, or vendor staff to achieve required safety program activities and outcomes.

What we would like from you:

  • Engineering degree (Marine, Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical/Mechatronic, Systems Engineering or other relevant engineering field);
  • Experience in Maritime Safety Engineering (surface or submarine);
  • Experience actively working in System Safety Engineering in major projects;
  • Australian Citizen with a current or re-activatable NV1 AGSVA clearance; and
  • 7+ years of relevant experience.

Desirable experience:

  • Previous experience managing major Defence acquisition safety programs or elements.
  • Use of engineering techniques and support tools such as DOORS and Goal Structure Notation.
  • Understanding and experience with MIL-STD-882C/D/E or comparable safety engineering standards tasks, requirements, and key outputs.
  • Experience within Australian Defence Maritime, Land or Aerospace materiel systems and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Independent Safety Assessment experience also highly regarded.
  • Sound understanding of software safety and human factors engineering, mechanical / electrical systems technologies and/or
  • Explosive ordnance systems within a Defence environment.
  • Highly developed communication skills for managing stakeholders and conveying technical risk issues.
  • Able to produce high quality solutions and effective document deliverables to required project time frames.
