Network Performance Engineer

Your role

Our network infrastructure underpins all critical customer activity across Commonwealth Bank covering 40% of payments and #1 Digital Banking experience in Australia. This role plays an integral part in ensuring that our critical IT services are designed, monitored and available to exceed our customer expectations.

Day to day you will undertake Network Performance and Resilience engineering including the development of monitoring of business flows and IT components, applying your Engineering expertise to analyse and solve the tough problems. You will provide technical and operational leadership during critical incidents and problem analysis from time to time. Finally, you will apply your wisdom and integrity via influencing others to continually strive for better.

The team you’re joining focus on reliability of CBA’s critical systems relying on the significant expertise and varied technical skills to advise, analyse and solve many of the trickiest problems we face.

Key initiatives include: 

  • Ensuring the Bank’s critical services are Always Available and Performing for our customers

  • Identifying and preventing issues from becoming customer-impacting events

  • Helping restore service as quickly as possible when critical incidents do happen.

  • Balancing deployment risks against business goals when assessing change

  • Always finding technical root cause for critical incidents

  • Identification, communication and mitigation of technology risks through change and production

  • Being an evangelist for service reliability and advising architects, developers and operators on good practices and techniques

  • Identifying opportunities and helping implement ideas that optimise for cost and performance.

  • Being the SME teams can turn to for assistance in understanding complex risks and issues in all layers of technology.

Your experience

  • Experience in 7x24 Real-Time Production network environments (Web Hosting preferred)

  • Extensive experience in managing and installing Layer 2 – Layer 7 Network devices

  • Detailed understanding of TCP/IP and higher layer protocols (eg HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, SNMP)

  • Strong Network fault analysis and diagnostic skills (Packet analysis, Syslog, Firewall logs)

  • Experience configuring and operating Network Management and Monitoring systems

  • Good documentation skills (Word, Excel, Visio) appropriate to a paperless work environment

  • Strong communication skills (Verbal and written)

  • Experience or a demonstrable interest in automation
