About The Role

A unique opportunity has arisen for a forward thinking and effective influencer with proven experience in Functional Safety within the rail, mining or resources industry and a passion for continuous improvement. This role will be based in our Perth office with occasional site travel.

Reporting to the Rail Engineering Manager as a Principal Rail Systems Safety Engineer, your core accountabilities will be to:

  • Define Systems Safety lifecycle management for functional safety related studies, projects and operations within the rail environment;
  • Ensure compliance with relevant statutory and legislative provisions in line with Rail Safety National Law;
  • Provide Systems Safety input to factory and site acceptance testing and site commissioning;
  • Develop technical documentation to satisfy Systems Safety lifecycle for functional safety related studies, projects and current operations;
  • Ensure that the operational safety objectives and engineering safety requirements are correctly spanned to all levels of the rail operation (software, hardware, COTS);
  • Work with business partners/stakeholders to integrate Systems Safety standards/processes into BHP systems.
  • Maintain an ongoing review of Incident Reports, identify breaches of system safety controls and identify new requirements.
  • Promotion of Safety in Design;
  • Provide ad-hoc training to BHP personnel about Systems Safety and Functional Safety fundamentals;
  • Assist with completion/development and continuous improvement of standards for Systems Safety within BHP
About You

As a proactive team player with the ability to deal with both strategic and technical issues you will work well with a broad cross section of stakeholders, projects, and changing priorities. You will have exceptional attention to detail and previous experience in a large-scale equipment automation and or control system environments using a variety OEM equipment will be highly regarded.

You May Also Have Experience Across The Following
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Standards, codes of practice, and regulations relating to Rail Systems Safety, Functional Safety and safety in design.
  • Experience with development of safety lifecycle documentation, such as hardware and software requirements and design specifications, and test documentation.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate requirements, challenges, and options to stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Systems Engineering principles.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical/Mechatronic/Mechanical Engineering and/or a related discipline.
  • Certified Functional Safety qualification or equivalent is highly desirable.
  • Qualification in Functional Safety in the topic of functional safety of machinery is highly desirable.
  • Further postgraduate qualifications would be well regarded.
