Project Engineer - Rail Grinding

The role:

The Project Engineer is required to provide technical expertise across maintenance, renewals, upgrades, and construction works that fall under their area of expertise. They are required to have an in depth understanding of rail grinding practices, processes and technology, together with an understanding of the management of grinding techniques to ensure the optimisation of rail assets. They are required to apply their expertise to all works thereby ensuring the output is delivered safely and as efficiently as possible.

Main duties:
  • Manage the technical requirements related to the application of rail profiles across the network
  • Adoption of cutting-edge technology for the evaluation of rail profiles and assessment of grinding performance
  • Provide technical support in maintenance, renewals, upgrades, and constructions works
  • Seek and implement innovative methods of improving safety and production
  • Support the delivery of works by assisting with planning, project management, work methodology and implementation of works on site to ensure work is completed efficiently, safely and complies with designs and Metro Trains' standards, specifications, and procedures
  • Ensure inspections and grinding are completed in accordance with the Technical Maintenance Plan
  • Monitor the quality of works undertaken, specifically grinding, and ensure corrective actions are undertaken where deficiencies are identified
  • Assist with investigations and review all investigation reports related to wheel/rail interaction and lubrication as required
  • Identify and support Engineering in type approvals of all infrastructure assets
  • Perform risk assessments of processes, work practices, materials, suppliers, and innovations to ensure inspections and work is delivered as efficiently and safely as possible
  • Review and assess compliance of systems and processes to standards, specifications, and procedures under guidance from the Principal Technical Lead responsible for compliance

Qualifications skills and experience:
  • Technical Qualification in Civil or Mechanical Engineering - mandatory
  • Technical tertiary qualification or Certificate IV in a designated rail related discipline - mandatory
  • Manual driver's license - desirable
  • First Aid Level 2 - desirable
