JOB DESCRIPTION

JDK Geotech Pty Ltd (JDK) is looking to further strengthen its rock engineering team with the addition of motivated and talented professionals with demonstrated experience in surface and underground mining.


JDK is expanding its team in NSW and QLD to include additional mining professionals for our growing project list. JDK is currently providing technical services to several clients in Australia, with most of our site work focused on three large-scale projects in the civil construction, mining and environmental sectors.

JDK is looking for two professional leaders to join our team (one full-time role, and one part-time role). The positions are best suited to experienced senior geologists, senior geotechnical engineers, tunnelling/mining engineers or engineering geologists. The candidates will form part of an already established technical services team, helping in the delivery of professional technical advice over several projects within the mining industry, in both open cut and underground (UG).


Roles are suited to professionals looking to achieve a healthy work-life balance, JDK is always forthcoming to accommodate a lifestyle roster (8/6 roster) where possible.

About the role:

Joining our company, you will be exposed to various geotechnical tasks across different projects, and report to the Mine Manager of the Client and the Technical Services Manager. The candidate will provide ad-hoc and daily geotechnical advice pertaining to the mine’s current and future mining practice, and provide insight and planning input for managing risks associated with geotechnical hazards within the bounds of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Regulation 2001. Always maintaining and contributing to improve mine safety.


Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Slope stability assessments, 3D modelling, and underground design review.
  • Assess and facilitate the assessment of new open pit and underground mines.
  • Assistance with other NSW and ACT rock engineering projects.
  • Ensuring that the mine complies with the relevant Mining Act and Regulations, with respect to managing geotechnical risk.
  • Review geotechnical core logging for vertical opening and stoping areas to ensure that structures are taken into account for UG stoping.
  • Working with mine planners to optimise stope and bench sequencing to promote good mining practice and predictable results.
  • Perform stability analysis of slopes in open pits and UG excavations using accepted industry practices.
  • Manage and review the Ground Control Management Plans for both open-cut and UG.
  • Design and implementation of Hazard Planning and Permits to Mine.
  • Facilitate all internal and external geotechnical audits and inspections, and develop and maintain internal auditing tools as required, including appropriate QA/QC.
  • Review/refine and optimise the ground support policies for underground development to manage the ground conditions in a cost-efficient and practical manner.
  • Improve selective mining processes via a reduction in stope over break and dilution.
  • Facilitate all geotechnical data acquisition and analysis conducted by third-party consultants, as required.
  • Prepare appropriate capital and operating budgets, and justifications relating to geotechnical expenditure.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards safety in the workplace, increase safety awareness, implement safety training and promotions, and set an example for others on site.


About you


To be successful in this role, you will possess;

  • Relevant Engineering, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering or Mining Engineering qualifications.
  • At least two years of coal mining industry experience in a geotechnical capacity with proven knowledge in underground mining methods.
  • Experience with geotechnical investigations, interpretation, reporting model development.
  • Technical skills in specialised Geotechnical & Mining Software, and Mine Planning Systems - including LeapFrog, Minex, Plaxis, RocScience suite and Map3D.
  • Extensive experience in mine operations with the ability to prioritise and schedule work while working safely at all times.
  • Familiarity with new technology developments and instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical skills coupled with a solid understanding of statutory requirements.
  • Excellent communicator with strong stakeholder relationship and engagement skills.
  • C class driver’s license (essential).
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in regional QLD on a FIFO basis. 
  • Open to being engaged in our other projects (NSW Tunnelling and Rock Engineering works).
  • Able to produce a National Police Clearance (valid within the last 12 months) for site access purposes.
