Legal Aid NSW is the largest legal aid agency in Australia, comprising a Central Sydney office and 25 regional offices in metropolitan and regional centres across NSW and a number of specialist services and advice clinics. Working at Legal Aid NSW provides the opportunity to support people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women and children, Indigenous people and people with mental illness who may experience difficulties when enforcing and defending their rights.

The Government Law Team is a large team in the Civil Law Division of Legal Aid NSW practising in the area of federal administrative law, in particular immigration, NDIS, social security and veterans’ law. The Veterans' Advocacy Service comprises solicitors and advocates who provide advice, casework and representation services in veterans' entitlements, including advocacy at the Veterans' Review Board and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The position is responsible for:

• Providing a high-quality lay advocacy service in veterans’ law and related matters, including providing information about entitlements, assisting with primary claims with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, conducting reviews at the Veterans’ Review Board and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, determining applications for legal aid, providing community legal education and contributing to law reform.

• Complying with the Legal Aid Commission Act, policies and practice management standards and undertaking all related administrative and case management activities.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a passion for assisting disadvantaged people obtain access to justice. We are looking for an outstanding advocate with relevant skills and experience to provide targeted, high-quality lay advocacy services in veterans’ law to socially and economically disadvantaged people. The successful applicants will be able to communicate effectively with clients and a diverse range of stakeholders. 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Not having a degree of Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws or Doctor of Laws or Bachelor of Legal Studies or being otherwise qualified for admission as a barrister and/or solicitor in any State or Territory of Australia. This is due to the prohibition on lawyers appearing at hearings at the Veterans’ Review Board. 

• Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check

• Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Resident or hold a valid working visa

• cover letter (maximum 2 pages) responding to the following two questions:

1. Describe how your skills and experience prepare you to effectively advise and represent disadvantaged clients in a range of settings including outreach and in-house advice clinics, alternative dispute resolution and tribunals.

2. Please outline your advocacy experience in veterans’ law or another area of work requiring written and oral advocacy. 

The selection process will include a range of comparative assessment techniques to assist in determining capability and suitability for the role.

This recruitment will be used to fill any current vacancies and may be used to create a Talent Pool for similar future temporary or ongoing vacancies that may arise over the next 18 months.
