About the team

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments. It is a standards writing body that is responsible for the development of the National Construction Code (NCC), comprising the Building Code of Australia and the Plumbing Code of Australia.

The ABCB promotes efficiency in the design, construction and performance of buildings and plumbing systems through the NCC and the development of effective regulatory and non-regulatory approaches.

Our ideal candidate

The successful candidate will have a qualification in (or be studying towards) either:

Building Certification/Building Surveying
Building/Built Environment
Architecture
Construction Management
Mechanical or Structural Engineering or
Plumbing or Hydraulic Design
Fire Engineering.

Successful candidates must have:
Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work and communicate well as a member of a team in a respectful and non-discriminatory manner, use sound judgement, professionalism and discretion in daily work
Sound writing skills with the capacity to write both clearly and persuasively
With general direction and guidance, the capacity to provide accurate and timely information and advice, think through problems and organise work
Sound research and analytical skills, and the capacity to apply these to building and plumbing regulation policy.

Desirable

A working knowledge or familiarity with the NCC. We welcome an example of a project or situation where you have used the NCC or have had to demonstrate or assess compliance with the NCC.

What you will do

Cadets will undertake rotations across ABCB teams, technical and non-technical. During this time, you will work with ABCB Managers on a range of issues relating to the development of the National Construction Code (NCC).

Key duties may include:
Researching technical and policy issues relevant to the building and plumbing industries
Examining the benefits and costs associated with proposed changes to the NCC
Assisting with technical committee meetings through the preparation of agendas, papers and minutes
Providing NCC related technical advice to both industry and the public and assisting with the development of education and awareness materials
Assisting in the review and assessment of NCC referenced documents including Australian Standards and documents proposed for referencing in the NCC.
Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

Qualifications must be from an Australian university or Institute of TAFE. If you are unsure if you are eligible, please speak to the Contact Officer.

Security Clearance

These positions require a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

These roles are based in Canberra. This recruitment process is being used to fill several non-ongoing APS Level 3 Cadetship vacancies, for a period of 12 months.
