About the role

A qualified bricklayer is needed that has solid experience in laying bricks to construct and repair walls, partitions and arches. The role will be responsible for the following key tasks:

  • Reading and working from plans to determine bricklaying specifications;
  • Laying building materials including bricks in rows, designs and shapes to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches and other structures;
  • Measuring the distance from reference points and marking guidelines on working surfaces to lay out work;
  • Spreading soft beds of mortar that serves as base and binder for bricks, using trowel;
  • Applying mortar to end of bricks and positioning bricks in the mortar bed;
  • Tapping bricks with trowel to level, align, and embed them in mortar, allowing specified thickness of joint;
  • Removing excess mortar from the face of bricks, using trowel;
  • Finishing mortar between bricks with pointing tool or trowel;
  • Determining vertical and horizontal alignment of courses, using gaugeline and level;
  • Cutting bricks using machines and hand tools, and shaping bricks to fit irregular spaces;
  • Fastening bricks to face of structures, with tie wires embedded in mortar between bricks, or in anchor holes in veneer brick;
  • Sealing foundations and spreading layers of mortar to serve as base and binder for blocks using trowels;
  • Repairing and preparing bricks for reuse;
  • Designing and cutting masonry and lettering and constructing walls using masonry slab blocks;
  • Erecting and dismantling scaffolding.

Suitability of candidate:

The ideal candidate will hold a recognised Certificate III in Bricklaying and have over five years experience in a similar role.
