Your new company

The Department of Justice is the state department responsible for correctional facilities in Tasmania. In this role you will be working with the Tasmanian Prison Service onsite at the Risdon Prison Complex. This complex includes maximum, medium and minimum-security facilities for male and female inmates.

The Tasmania Prison Service contributes to a safer Tasmania by keeping in secure custody those sentenced by the Courts. It provides a correctional system with a vision is to stop re-offences by providing inmates opportunities for rehabilitation, personal development, reintegration and community engagement.

Your new role

This role will see you working in a dedicated joinery workshop which exists to upskill selected inmates on cabinet making skills. The woodwork room produces items to order such as jewellery boxes, decorative bowls, key rings, picture frames and a variety of other timber items for the home. In this role you will work alongside around 16 low risk inmates and provide them with teaching and guidance on a variety joinery tools and techniques to train them on the art of cabinet making. You will ensure that items are made to plan, and that strict safety and security processes are being followed. You will also need to do some machine maintenance on saws etc and be able to operate a laser saw. Flexible days of work are available for the right candidate and it will be two days of work per week usually.

  • Trade qualification in Cabinet Making
  • Building industry employment experience
  • Current Australian Federal police check
  • Australian Citizenship
  • Good with people
  • Enjoy teaching and seeing people develop
  • Medium rigid license and forklift licence are desirable

You will receive an above award hourly rate, a 9.5% super contribution, a 2% contribution to your TasBuild fund, and a weekly pay cycle. Working through Hays as a casual, you will receive regular contact and post-placement care from our Consultant for the duration of the work.
