Our Region

Central Darling Shire is the largest Shire in NSW and yet has the smallest population. It covers an area about the size of the main island of Tasmania and yet has a population of less than 2,000 people. The Shire is extremely diverse with four main communities – Wilcannia, Menindee, Ivanhoe and White Cliffs. Each of these communities are different in their commerce, geography and Indigenous and European cultures.

The Opportunity

Council has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Engineer to join the team. You will be responsible for for providing high level support in the effective delivery of Council’s Environmental Services portfolio for the Shire Services Department, in the areas of wastewater, land management, cemeteries, health and building matters, food inspections, swimming pools and animal control.

While the role is primarily based in Wilcannia, the position will be required to work across the Central Darling Shire Council region.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science or a similar
  • High level knowledge of environmental protection management principles.
  • Sound understanding of legislation (Acts and Regulations) relating to cemeteries, water and wastewater, animal control, waste management and development assessment.
  • Sound interpersonal skills to lead and motivate staff.
  • High level initiative and judgement that enables effective problem-solving skills at an operational level.
  • Demonstrated high level of time management and organisational skills.
  • Demonstrated written communication skills in relation to the preparation of correspondence, reports, minutes.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to be courteous, sensitive and have a professional approach in dealing with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to providing quality customer service both face to face and on the telephone.
  • Experience in working as part of a team, and the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to act in a professional manner and adhere to Council’s values and behaviours.
  • Organisational skills, with the ability to set work priorities, plan and organise activities.
  • Understanding of and capacity to implement EEO, WHS, ethical work practice.
  • Skills and prior knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite in particular Outlook.
  • Well demonstrated knowledge and understanding of computer systems which includes the ability to update computerised databases.
  • Satisfactory Australian National Police Clearance Check and Working with Children clearances.

Central Darling Shire Grade 12, starting at $3,486.60 (Entry Level) per fortnight plus superannuation. Subsided housing within Wilcannia is available for this position.
