The Role
Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) undertake research and activities which involve the acquisition, use, storage, handling and transport of Hazardous Chemicals. The successful applicant will provide in-depth knowledge and compliance guidance for hazardous chemicals used across DST Group.

The Hazardous Chemical Safety Advisor works independently, applying expert subject matter knowledge to support research activities. They will provide advice of the life cycle elements of Hazardous Chemical Management including, acquisition, storage, handling and disposal.

This position is established within the Research Services Work Health and Safety Team within the Research Services Division (RSD). The position is located on the DST Group Melbourne site and provides operational oversight for the running of the onsite Hazardous Chemical Store.

Position Duties

1. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of Chemical Safety Management System elements, ensuring alignment with legislation and Defence policy requirements.

2. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on Hazardous Chemicals and represent DST Group on the Defence HazChem Working Group and other related projects.

3. Work collaboratively with occupational health professionals and other work health and safety specialists. This will support referrals for Health Monitoring and licencing requirements as required.

4. Provide oversight to the implementation of the Defence Chemical Information Management System (ChemAlert) in support of research activities.

5. Provide oversight of the DST Group Poisons licences, and Poison Control Plans (PCP) and annual compliance reviews.

6. Assess and evaluate Hazardous Chemical strategies, initiatives, projects, policies and procedures to establish best practices and recommend courses of action within the research setting.

7. Engage with NICNAS to support chemicals imported by DST Group to support research.

Research Services Division (RSD) has a workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research services and innovative solutions which underpin the operational capability of DST Group. RSD’s work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DST Group at the forefront of research and development.

The Research Operations branch is responsible for operational business process reform and performance management of enabling services in DST Group - specifically, Research Safety; Research Security and Integrity; Research Infrastructure; Science Resource Management; and specialised Research Administration. ROS delivers only those services that are unique to DSTG's specific S&T requirements and cannot be delivered by Defence’s shared service organisations.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are an experienced Health and Safety professional with relevant qualifications and experience in related hazardous substance and safety management.

In addition they will be able to communicate with influence, build networks and achieve results.

Past experience with the management of a Hazardous Chemical/Substance Management Information system such as ChemAlert or similar is highly desirable.
