Full Job Description
The QUT Medical Engineering Research
Facility within the Research Portfolio
(Research Infrastructure) is looking for casual
animal technician(s) to support activities at the
UQ Pinjarra Hills Farm and/or MERF.
Assistance is required on most weekends and
during some weekdays, depending on

This position reports to the BRF Coordinator
for supervision and workload management.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Assistance with:
  • General animal husbandry
  • record keeping and
  • monitoring requirements
  • Animal welfare in accordance with
relevant animal welfare legislation.

  • Participate in the day-to-day maintenance
of the facility.

  • Ensure area is kept clean at all times and
that animals are kept in optimum hygiene

  • Compliance with health and safety policies,
procedures, hazard reporting and safe work

To ensure job flexibility the successful

appointee may be required to:
  • perform any other duties as nominated by
the University consistent with the relevant
classification descriptors detailed in the
Enterprise Agreement. Staff undertaking
any new duties will receive training;

  • participate in job rotation or multiskilling in
consultation with their supervisor;

  • work across campuses
Type of appointment

This appointment will be offered on a Casual
basis for a 6-month term initially.


QUT Medical Engineering Research Facility
(MERF) at the Prince Charles Hospital, and its
agistment facility at UQ Pinjarra Hills.

Selection Criteria

1. Relevant tertiary qualification (or progress
towards it) in Veterinary Technology or

2. Demonstrated experience in the care and
husbandry of farm and/or research

3. Commitment to the ethical treatment of

and to work effectively as a team
member to complete work tasks.

the position (i.e., lift/move/carry weights
of up to 12kg on a regular basis, and up
to 25-30kg occasionally).

Remuneration and Benefits

The classification for this position is Higher
Education Worker Level 3 (HEW3) which has a
casual hourly rate range of $36.14 to $40.20
per hour (inclusive of hourly rate plus casual
loading of 25% and 9.5% superannuation).

In July 2020 QUT staff voted in favour of a
variation to its Enterprise Agreements. The
variations were approved by the Fair Work
Commission in August 2020.

The variation impacts leave loading (for new
staff no loading will be paid or accrued during
the period the variation is in effect), salary
increases (the salary increase which was due
to occur in the first full pay period of December
2020 has been deferred until the first full pay
period of December 2021) and superannuation
(superannuation will be paid to staff as though
the salary increase which would have been
paid in December 2020 has taken effect and,
subject to the rules of the superannuation fund,
a defined benefit member will continue to make
contributions in alignment with the contributions
