Job Summary

The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to join the AMQ Streams team in Brisbane, Australia. In this role, you will be focusing on enabling the management of Kafka clusters at scale. The AMQ Streams team develops and maintains Strimzi, a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Sandbox project that focuses on deploying and operating Kafka clusters on Kubernetes. Using your expertise in SRE principles of automation and continuous improvement, you will help create an environment where availability, reliability, and security are threaded through the entire application life cycle, not treated as an afterthought. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will write new software as required to automate security aspects of the production readiness review, as well as continue to monitor for new issues in production.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Iteratively design, build, improve, and test software components and processes used in the management of Apache Kafka clusters running at scale on Red Hat OpenShift
  • Establish and enforce SRE best practices through platform constraints and high-fidelity system modeling
  • Develop secure service architectures using cloud-native technologies coupled with traditional security approaches
  • Develop systems to prevent outages through automatic scanning and remediation
  • Interact with globally distributed open source project teams and communities
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, typically every 6 weeks

Required Skills
  • Solid understanding of the principles of reliable distributed systems
  • Advanced programming experience in at least one of Java, Go, or Python
  • Proven ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Written and verbal English communication skills
  • Passion for open source software, positive attitude, and a desire to share ideas openly
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering, or relevant industry experience
  • Experience with Apache Kafka, developing applications, and managing Apache Kafka clusters is a big plus
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes in production is a big plus
  • Record of successful participation in open source project communities is a plus
