Liquip International - part of OPW, is a global leader in fluid handling, metering, filtration and control solutions for the petro-chemical industry. This Applications Engineer role represents our commitment to developing innovative and effective customer solutions for industry.

This is primarily a design role, which also involves project management and technical support. The Applications Engineer will be required to generate solutions to suit customer needs and take these from concept through to commissioning.

The focus of this role is the design, manufacture and support of fuel handling solutions, including pumping, filtration and metering systems in tanker, terminal and aviation fields. Beyond design, this role will also require management of all project stages, from quotation to delivery. These projects will frequently be AS and ASME pressure pipework but can also include pressure vessels and other components. These will form part of complex/precise flow control and measurement systems with strict compliance requirements.

This is an opportunity to excel in an interesting and varied industry, with a wide range of technical challenges. In order to succeed in this role, the Applications Engineer will need to be adaptable, proactive and confident in applying their existing knowledge to new scenarios.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Responsibilities:

  • Design of fuel terminal loading systems following industry practice and in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Such systems may include:
    • Loading arms and floating suctions
    • Fluid handling components such as valves, couplers and meters
    • Electronic and pneumatic components, as part of required control systems
    • Structural framework
  • Compliance with petrochemical and other industry standards
  • Estimating and quote preparation for fabricated items
  • Detail drafting of components and assemblies
  • Management of small or medium fabricated projects, including:
    • Technical customer liaison
    • Specification and standards compliance review
    • Design and modelling/drafting
    • Quote preparation
    • Supplier/fabricator communication and component sourcing
    • QA/QC documentation management
    • Assist with the generation, implementation, review and compilation of project MDRs (and ITPs where applicable)
    • Commissioning (where required)
  • Assist New Product Development (NPD) Engineers when required
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or relevant Engineering Qualification
  • 5 or more years’ experience in fluid handling, petrochemical or similar industry
  • Piping or vessel design experience essential (to Australian or international standards)
  • Prior experience in managing small projects is required
  • Filtration or fuelling industry experience desirable
  • Advanced experience with 3D modelling program (preferably Solidworks) including 2D drawing generation
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing skills, including quotation and technical report writing
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn

Desired Characteristics, Competence and Capabilities:

  • Experience within fuelling, aviation or oil and gas industries would be highly regarded
  • Experience in the fabrication of pressure pipework or vessels would be highly regarded
  • Experience in fluid dispensing, pumping, metering, or filtration systems highly regarded
  • Knowledge of formal QA/QC documentation including PQP, ITP and material traceability requirements would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of Non Destructive Testing and Welding documentation (including PQR, WPS and WQTR) beneficial but not essential
  • Knowledge of Excel, MATLAB, or specific pressure vessel/piping design calculation software, as required for efficient design calculations to standards
  • Proactive nature and ability to independently follow tasks through to completion
