Location: York, PA

The Product Engineer works closely with Product Management, Proposal Engineers, Market Areas, and Lead Engineers to provide technical problem-solving and application support to capital horizontal mill projects and product development. Supports the review of drawings and specifications, with a heavy emphasis on vendor design review and quotations while supporting the preparation of estimates and proposals. The engineer will have the responsibility to collaborate in the development of Metso Outotec’s standard product portfolio while staying up to date with the global instrumentation, control strategies, and power train technologies to deliver the agreed product roadmap. Excellent communication and effective interpersonal skills are required as the Product Engineer will have frequent interactions with customers and suppliers while supporting product development. The position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize work on several projects simultaneously and present a positive, cooperative demeanor with customers and co-workers.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Product and Project Managers, Process and Project Engineers to provide technical problem solving and innovative thinking supporting the grinding mill product roadmap.
  • Review customer specifications, determine the application of specifications on Metso Outotec grinding mill products, determine if exceptions need to be taken within specification, and ensure final design meets accepted specifications.
  • Review vendor technical offers for technical and commercial feasibility.
  • Develop, revise and maintain electrical specifications and datasheets as per the product requirements, while keeping up to date with industry-wide standard practices and regulatory standards.
  • Suggest product improvement ideas.
  • Visit customer offices and plant sites to determine physical restrictions or limitations in overall plant design.
  • Applying knowledge of electric power and control systems to specified designs.
  • Troubleshoot electrical power and control systems to identify and correct malfunctions.
  • Production of technical papers for media such as marketing newsletters, conferences, and/or industry journals.
  • Showing a commitment to quality, ethics, and a focus on meeting the needs and expectations of both internal and external customers.
  • Observing safety regulations and exhibiting a concern for safety.
  • Assisting in development projects.
  • Providing input to facilitate process improvement.
  • Undertaking other duties as may be assigned by the Product Engineering Manager or other management personnel.
  • Traveling (both domestically and internationally) may be required as needed.

Qualifications And Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering/related field.
  • Minimum 5 years electrical design, commissioning, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2 years experience with grinding equipment and systems.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical power systems including but not limited to: Motors; Drives; MCC’s; E-houses; Transformers; HV Switchgear.
  • Strong knowledge of HV mill drive systems including but not limited to: Wound rotor induction motors + LRS + SER; Low-speed synchronous motors + VFD; Low/High-speed induction motors + VFD; GMD.
  • Knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation, and automation.
  • Knowledge of international regulatory standards and statutory requirements.
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards.
  • Knowledge of CAD and E-plan is a plus.

Skills And Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and effective interpersonal skills are required, as this person will have frequent interaction with both internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Solid computer skills, including all Microsoft Office Products, and CAD.
  • Must be able to function effectively both as a member of a team and as an individual contributor.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted with minimal supervision.
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to work under stress and meet tight deadlines.
  • Must be capable of effectively working on several projects at one time.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel will be required as needed, may include both domestic and international (up to 15%).
