Metallurgical coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate two open cut and three underground metallurgical coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, every year producing millions of tonnes of the highest quality hard coking coal for this purpose.

Job Description

We are currently seeking an experienced CHPP Reliability Engineer to assist the Capcoal Surface Operations team on a large variety of equipment. This role will see you monitor maintenance systems and standards in order for the CHPP department to predictably deliver and sustain the required asset performance and cost objectives. This role contributes to the Department’s strategic objectives as the principal advisor on Reliability Engineering systems and processes.

This is an opportunity to work at one of the largest multi-product dual coal handling preparation plants in the Bowen Basin. As a Reliability Engineer you will utilise your extensive experience in fixed plant by providing technical guidance to the maintenance department in promoting the process of defect elimination, identify modifications and improve equipment reliability safely. You will need the ability to logically problem solve and to provide recommendations on balancing short and long term strategies and solutions for this dual plant facility.

With extensive interactions across various departments, you will require solid written and verbal communication skills, enjoy solving a variety of reliability maintenance problems and be an effective team player. This diverse role requires the successful candidate to have a keen eye for detail and the skill to analyse performance data to identify and prioritise areas for improvement. You will be responsible for improving asset operational time through Asset Management, Condition Monitoring, Defect Elimination, Root Cause Analysis, Managing Machine Heath Programs and Continuous Improvement.


Degree from a tertiary institution relevant to discipline - Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, alternatively possess a Trade Qualification with at least five years’ experience within a Coal Handling Preparation Plant.

Working in one of the largest coal handling preparation plants in the Bowen Basin you will be able to utilise your experience in fixed plant to:

  • Provide technical guidance on defect elimination, modifications and continuous improvements;
  • Logically problem solve to provide fit for purpose solutions whilst balancing; short- and long-term strategies;
  • Analyse performance data to identify and prioritise areas for improvement;
  • Collaborate and build strong relationships across a range of stakeholders;
  • Experience in CMMS software and Microsoft packages.
  • Mechanical/Reliability Engineering experience (preferably Coal).
  • CHPP Electrical Reliability experience and/or willing to learn
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to a team of professionals to deliver against set targets.
  • Experience delivering best practice.
  • Ability to understand functionality of business systems and provide relevant data for business purposes.
  • Track record in developing continuous improvement ideas.
  • In depth knowledge of Electrical Maintenance systems.
  • An understanding of the coal mining process.
  • Knowledge of relevant mining legislation.
  • A high level of planning and problem-solving ability.
  • An understanding of key safety risks and ways to mitigate these.

This is a Monday-Friday role based at our Capcoal Surface Operation in Middlemount, QLD. This role is suitable for both residential and DIDO commuting. Subsidised accommodation is on offer with this role (residentially) and/or camp accommodation.
