About the Design Branch

The Design Branch, as part of the Precincts team within Development Victoria, is responsible for providing strategic direction and design services on a diverse range of projects, from Innovation Districts to new acquisitions for policy rich residential development. 

We value design that improves quality of life, prioritising buildings and spaces that deliver social and economic benefit to Victoria.

We apply hands-on architecture and urban design services, feasibility studies, strategic thinking and design direction to influence and assist government and build strong relationships with partner agencies and industry. We work closely with a multi-disciplinary team at Development Victoria across the full life cycle of projects. Problem solving and design thinking underpin our work.

Job Description

About the role

This position is a 12-month contract.

Applying your expertise in architecture and urban design to the role of Assistant Design Manager, you will work collaboratively with a diverse team at Development Victoria through the strategy, feasibility, planning and design stages of major precincts such as Arden, Docklands and Fishermans Bend, and prepare concept designs for mixed-use and residential development for new site acquisitions.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Support the design team on precinct urban design strategies and concept design.
  • Prepare concept designs and feasibility studies for a wide range of potential site acquisitions including multi-residential, townhouse and commercial development.
  • Assist with the preparation of strategic documents to communicate the vision and objectives of our projects to government and key stakeholders.
  • Assist with input and research into the discussion of design, affordability, and environmental excellence.
  • Assist in providing general design support and design review for other divisions.
  • Coordinate and participate in project meetings, prepare meeting agendas and minutes.

Desired Skills and Experience

About you

Your background in architecture or urban design and proven experience in multi-residential development, urban design, concept development, strategy and project management will allow you to shape the role and provide a positive impact across many exciting projects.

Ideally you will have:

  • 5+ years’ experience in architecture and urban design.
  • Appropriate qualifications relevant to the requirements of the role.
  • Experience in multi-residential housing development, mixed-use and urban renewal.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage projects to timeline and budget.
  • Experience in preparing feasibility studies and concept designs.
  • Proven experience and knowledge of working within the planning framework and working knowledge of relevant regulations associated with residential development.
