The Queensland Government Architect is responsible for providing whole-of-government leadership and strategic advice in relation to the built environment, urban design, procurement and heritage issues. The purpose of this advice is to improve the quality of the built environment in Queensland and ensure that its unique architectural heritage is respected and enhanced. The role advocates for high quality and innovative design to be given primary consideration for government projects and public buildings and assists Queensland architects in undertaking government work. In addition, the role promotes community awareness of built environment issues and facilitates linkages between community expectations and government built environment initiatives.

The Queensland Government Architect is responsible for advocating across all levels of government for quality urban design outcomes from capital works projects and programs to policy and implementation programs. This includes chairing the Queensland Design and Places Panel, responding to the State Code 24 reporting requirements and advancing the interests of the department in seeking quality urban outcomes for all state funded capital works projects with a strategically important public realm interface. The role seeks to advance the critical role of urban design in our cities by advocating for a Better Design Agenda. It is expected that the Queensland Government Architect is an eminent professional who is recognised within the architectural discipline and respected within the building industry. The position provides leadership in the building industry and requires strong professional expertise and influence to provide strategic advice across all government agencies and the building industry on the built environment, urban design, procurement and heritage issues.

We are seeking a candidate who will take personal responsibility for serving the government of the day and meet the needs of the people and communities of Queensland. As an executive you will work towards a system of world class service delivery and public sector engagement. Candidates must be currently registered with the Board of Architects or alternatively must be eligible to seek registration. You will possess proven and high-level engagement with professional bodies such as the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and Heritage Council of Queensland and are registered (or eligible for registration) as an architect in Queensland. You will have strong interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate with influence to cultivate productive working relationships. You have a demonstrated capacity to shape strategic thinking in a complex and dynamic building and construction environment and possess a mentoring/coaching leadership style which encourages further development with design responsibilities to build knowledge and capability.
