Maddocks is committed to making a difference for our clients, our people and the communities in which we operate.

About the role

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Lawyer/Associate in our well regarded Development team, headed up by Partner Nick Holuigue. The Development practice at Maddocks is the pre-eminent development practice in Victoria (with a team consisting of over 50 people) who work and collaborate with other sections of the firm, in order to provide end to end legal advice in the development cycle. There are five Partners in the group and the team works with a range of clients.

This role, working closely with Bettina Sheeran and Nicholas Sparks, will focus on complex development work for clients including Cedar Woods and Metro Property.

We work flexibly at Maddocks, whether that’s hours, place of work, the leave you take or the everyday flexibility that we all need from time to time. We welcome the opportunity to talk to you about working flexibly.

About you

You will have solid experience (3-4 years' PQE+) in the area of property law.

The successful candidate will have experience in the whole development cycle including areas of property acquisition/disposition and have development delivery experience in the residential, commercial/retail and/or industrial sectors. As well as working on major projects and complex developments, ideally, the successful candidate will also have some leasing experience to assist in providing leasing advice for the increasing number of commercial, retail, mixed use, industrial and hotel assets the development team’s clients are constructing as part of their projects.

Applicants must possess the following skills:

  • Good general knowledge of all aspects of property - leasing, licensing, body corporate, acquisitions, subdivisions.
  • Ability to advise on all areas of property law.
  • Experience in property development transactions from inception to completion.
  • Interpretation on a range of statutory legislation.
  • Able to communicate with an entrepreneurial client group.
  • Due to our growing client base, proficiency in Mandarin (oral and/or written skills) will be highly regarded and set you apart from other candidates.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • The need for technical excellence;
  • Being an innovative thinker, comfortable with learning new concepts and systems quickly (ePortfolio and eContracts); and
  • Participate in activities that build teamwork and relationships with other lawyers and support staff.
