College of Science and Engineering

Under broad direction from the Manager - Engineering Services, the Electronics Engineer provides quality and timely support to staff and students within the College of Science & Engineering through delivery of technical services. These services include the design, construction, commissioning, advice, repair, instruction and documentation activities required to support Science & Engineering teaching and research activities.

Key Position Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Manager - Engineering Services in the delivery of projects and services for teaching and research in accordance with College priorities.
  • Functional supervision of Electro-technical team tasks including project scoping, planning, scheduling and contributing to continuous improvement of support service processes.
  • Designing, developing, constructing, commissioning and maintaining highly specialised equipment and systems in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Providing expert advice, recommendations and feedback to staff & students on the operation of equipment, safety and practical engineering design considerations within teaching, research and other College supported activities.
  • Liaising with outside organisations and contractors on complex technical matters.
  • Carrying out repairs, maintenance, calibration to commercial & in-house constructed scientific equipment and systems.
  • Performing administrative functions associated with design documentation, purchasing of specialised technical items and test, calibration & maintenance records.
  • Preparing Workplace Health & Safety and compliance related documentation and supervision of the systems of safety on one or more teaching laboratories.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.
Key Position Capabilities
  • Relevant degree in Electronic Engineering with broad experience, or, Associate Diploma in Electronic Engineering or equivalent qualification with extensive experience.
  • Demonstrated experience functionally supervising teams of professional engineers and technical specialists undertaking a number of concurrent projects.
  • Broad experience in complex innovative electronic design work and advanced skill in reading and understanding schematic diagrams, manufacturer data, network connected hardware and technical manuals.
  • High level analytical skills together with the capacity to assess, understand, exercise technical judgement and communicate complex technical matters in a clear accurate manner.
  • Excellent hand skills and proven ability to perform constructional assembly, rework and repair of electronic assemblies and light mechanical apparatus.
  • Experience working in a managed Workplace Health and Safety environment.
  • Ability to liaise with a broad range of staff and students together with a demonstrated enthusiasm for customer service and the support of other team members.
  • Electronics industry design for manufacturing experience (desirable).
  • Formal qualifications and experience in project management (desirable).
  • Experience designing with PLCs, FPGAs and embedded systems (desirable).
