Consolidating engineering, economics and science capabilities forms the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering (WASM:MECE). This position is related to Drilling Mechanics Group which is engaged with industry for optimisation and automation of drilling operation.

Your new role

An excellent opportunity exists for an experienced Mechanical trade assistant or maintenance trade person to join the Drilling Mechanics research team. The research interests of the Drilling Mechanics Group (DMG) centred on the interactions taking place while drilling: interactions often coupled between the drill bit, the rock, the drilling fluid and the driving mechanisms (drill rig, downhole motors). Scientific research is conducted with the overarching objective of delivering simple, practical engineering models but also technical solutions that can be implemented on site.

This position will undertake a variety of support to DMG research team including mechanical/maintenance support to maintain/modify, build/commissioning research prototypes, brainstorm for design of equipment and support deployment of research prototype on site. The candidate will work closely with the team mechanical fitter.
The ideal candidate will have outstanding communication skills with the ability to liaise with a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders within a dynamic and innovative research team. This fantastic opportunity also offers job variety and career development for an ambitious individual who is interested to develop their knowledge and experience within drilling for minerals, hydrocarbon and geothermal exploration.

Duties include:
  • Build, Set-up/dismantle, commission research prototypes.
  • Design, build and machine components to fit different components on protypes.
  • Maintain labs safety and best practices of housekeeping.
  • Support testing and deployment of these prototypes in lab and field.
  • Always comply with operating procedures.
  • Interstate travel will be required.

Experience required (selection criteria):
  • Completion of trade certificate 3 or 4 in mechanical trade or equivalent experience to fulfill the work requirement.
  • Experience in equipment commissioning and maintenance.
  • Some basic Microsoft Office computer skills.
  • Able to work in remote and harsh environments (e.g., mining drill site).
  • Thrives in a dynamic environment and stay calm under pressure.
  • Good at teamwork, communication, work precisely and eager to learn new skills.
  • Previous experience in working with sensors, data acquisition systems, PLC and knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems – desirable.
